Abstract

Health psychology research focuses on increasing access to health care and improving health outcomes. Although aiming to benefit patients, this talk will argue that research promoting medication adherence, help seeking, screening and behaviour change also have the potential for harm.  In particular, it will argue that health psychology may have inadvertently contributed to psychological harms (e.g., lead times, anxiety, risk compensation, rebound effects), medical harms (eg. medication side effects, unnecessary procedures) and social harms (e.g., financial costs, increased consultations rates). Such harms may result from medicalization or pharmaceuticalisation. Or they may reflect the ways in which we manage probabilities and an optimistic bias that emphasises benefit over cost.
